Sosogama – Pottery Rooted in Daily Life
Based in Aira, Kagoshima, Sosogama is a pottery workshop known for its signature shinogi-simple, hand-carved striped patterns that bring warmth and character to everyday ceramics. With their inviting textures and distinctive glazes, Sosogama pieces beautifully complement both Japanese and Western dishes.
The Charm of Sosogama
Sosogama’s range includes rice bowls, plates, and mugs, each hand-carved with the shinogi technique. These subtle variations make every piece unique, adding rustic charm to the table. Glazed in soft, earthy tones like “White (Kohiki),” “Straw White,” “Matte Red,” “Green,” and “Navy,” each colour is achieved using traditional methods.
Thoughtfully designed for modern life, Sosogama ceramics are microwave- and oven-safe. They’re lightweight yet stable-crafted to be used and enjoyed every day.
History and the Makers
Founded in 1967 by potter Akihiro Takenouchi, Sosogama draws its name from two characters: “宋” (Sō) from China’s Song Dynasty, a golden era for ceramics, and “艸” (Sō), symbolizing the desire to take root and grow.
Today, the studio is led by his son, Taku Takenouchi, who initially studied metal casting at Kanazawa College of Art and worked in sculpture before discovering pottery. Enchanted by its expressive possibilities, he returned to train under his father and carry on the Sosogama legacy.
A Spirit of Creative Freedom
At Sosogama, father and son create side by side, blending tradition with a spirit of experimentation. Taku’s philosophy “to make what I love” guides his work, leading to ceramics that are both functional and expressive.
This balance of heritage and creativity allows Sosogama pieces to naturally fit into everyday life, quietly enriching the moments we share around the table.
